The Battle of Knockdoe, one of the bloodiest conflicts in Irish history, in which over 5,000 men were killed. The forces of Garret Mór FitzGerald, Earl of Kildare, defeated those of Ulick Burke, Clanrickard.

The ship Catalpa arrived in New York harbour with the Fenian prisoners it had rescued from Freemantle, Australia.
